Buying chicken coops - recommended features to look for

Suitable housing is the key to happy, healthy birds. Below we have compared our luxury chicken coop against the key features we recommend you look at when choosing a coop:

Feature Has feature Details
Predator-proof
Your chicken coop must be predator proof, from all sides, above and below. Any exposed areas should be securely covered with chicken wire. All openings should be locked with predator proof bolts.

Yes

All external openings are secured with lockable bolts
Secure from rodents
Your coop must be secured from rodents, as they will be attracted by the feed and droppings. Rodents need to be blocked from entering the coop, especially from below.

Yes

The coop is protected from both the damp and rodents by a raised floor
Ventilation to prevent respiratory diseases
Your chickens need adequate ventilation to prevent respiratory diseases, (to which they are especially prone), without being too drafty.

Yes

Rear ventilation slot
Easy clean
Your coop should be easy to clean to prevent a build up of bacteria and bugs.

Yes

1 full height front entrance door into the run area, 2 lower level side doors under raised sheltered area, 1 rear access door into sheltered area and lids on nest boxes open

"Roosting poles" for your pet poulty to sleep on
Your coop should include “roosting poles” for your chickens to sleep on. These should be 2” wide with round edges, allowing 10” of space per bird. If more than one pole is needed, they should be 10” apart and stepped in height so that neighbouring poles are several inches apart.

Yes

4 "roosting poles" which are removable
Nest box to encourage egg-laying
Your coop should have one or more nest boxes to encourage your hens to lay eggs – approximately one nest box for every five hens is sufficient. Nest boxes should be dark and secluded, as the hen’s instinct is to lay her eggs in a safe place. They should also be raised off the ground a few inches, but lower than the lowest roosting pole.

Yes

2 x nest boxes with dividers for 3 sections
